Colleen Brown Driscoll

(NOTE: The benefit for Colleen has been held, but the NDAD fund set up for her remains open to accept additional donations.)

Colleen Brown Driscoll has given 37 years of her life to helping others.

The Grand Forks resident has done foster care for children and their families who had emotional distress and physical or intellectual disabilities, or both. Colleen also worked with adults with disabilities living in group homes.

Now she really can use help from others.

On Jan. 1, 2014, Colleen was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. It quickly metastasized, affecting her abdomen and some organs. Colleen underwent surgery on April 2014. She soon started chemotherapy.

Colleen, most recently a supervisor of group homes for Development Homes Inc., was able to work part time until January 2017. She was put on a treatment with chemo capsules, but in August 2018 tests showed cancer had spread to her liver. She again resumed receiving regular chemotherapy through a port in her chest. More recent tests show the cancer has reached her lymph system.

Her medical bills continue to mount, despite insurance. In January 2018, her patient responsibility increases to $10,000 plus her insurance deductible for the year.

A benefit, sponsored by charitable nonprofit NDAD, has been set for Sat., Nov. 3, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the VFW in East Grand Forks, Minn., 312 Demers Ave. The event will feature a taco-in-a-bag meal, bake sale and silent auction, plus an hourly drawing for a prize (your presence is required at the time of the drawing to win).

There are other ways to help.

Contact Betty at (701) 213-7208 if you have a silent auction item you'd like to donate.

Brooke Carlson
The doctor gave Brooke Carlson a restriction she simply had to follow: no running, walking or putting weight on her hips for one year’s time. Hardly the type of restriction welcomed by an 8-year-old active in gymnastics since she was 2. Still, Brooke recalls the pain she felt in the summer. Her mom, Lisa Nelson, recalls when she realized ...
