A Success Story

Lloyd Kellar Lloyd Kellar was referred to NDAD by the dialysis social worker at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND for assistance with medical travel. NDAD assists Lloyd with the cost of transit tickets to and from his dialysis appointments. He has been on dialysis since October 2006.

Dialysis is a treatment that does some of the things done by healthy kidneys. It is needed when your own kidneys can no longer take care of your body's needs. A person needs dialysis when he or she develops end stage kidney failure - usually by the time a person loses 85-90% of his or her kidney function. Like healthy kidneys, dialysis keeps a person's body in balance. Dialysis does the following: removes waste, salt and extra water to prevent them from building up in the body; keeps a safe level of certain chemicals in your body, such as potassium, sodium and bicarbonate; and helps to control blood pressure.

Lloyd is currently on the waiting list for a kidney transplant. Just over two months ago he missed an opportunity for a kidney because his cell phone was not working at the time he was called. Lloyd's name has gone back on the waiting list.

Throughout his years, Lloyd was a business owner and owned several companies including Nodak Stages, a tour bus company, and Super Mini Mart, a grocery/convenience store in Wilton, ND. Through Nodak Stages, Lloyd was able to do lots of traveling throughout the United States and Canada.

Lloyd is an active man with a great sense of humor. He has a total of 10 children and 17 grandchildren. He enjoys playing pranks on the nurses at the dialysis unit, watching medical shows and talking with friends and family.
