Our Guidelines

NDAD does not attempt to define the term "Disabled," because there are many different types of disabilities and each person has unique needs. Every effort is made to provide appropriate services to eligible clients.

NDAD, founded in 1975, is not affiliated with any other agency or organization. Consequently, no portion of the NDAD budget is sent out of the area to support a regional or national organization.

Often, disabling conditions can be very costly. NDAD follows a philosophy that disabled persons can live more satisfying, productive lives if they have the opportunity. Many times, this requires the purchase of specialized equipment, medical treatment, or other services.

NDAD works with local school districts, Vocational Rehabilitation, Human Service Centers, etc. so as not to duplicate assistance provided by these organizations.

As a nonprofit organization, funds are limited. Therefore, NDAD is unable to grant every request. Assistance is provided on a priority basis, according to established guidelines.

A Success Story

Gordon Roberge For Gordon Roberge of Fargo, ND life was moving right along until one morning he woke up and half of his body was numb. He also had double vision. This lasted for a couple of months, went away for a few years then returned. In 1981, Gordon was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Gordon worked as a salesman for a sporting goods company out of Sauk Rapids, MN until 1992. Due to the multiple sclerosis, Gordon was forced to quit working.

After moving to Bismarck, Gordon saw an advertisement on TV about NDAD and the services they provided. Since driving was becoming difficult, he decided to contact NDAD to see how they could assist him. NDAD was able to assist Gordon with hand controls for his van. The hand controls offer Gordon the freedom to go and do what he wants, when he wants. Gordon enjoys his independence! Since one of Gordon’s hobbies is fishing this gives him the freedom to once again drop a fishing line and tell fishing tales.

Gordon says, "The staff at NDAD is very helpful. They were able to answer my questions and get me the help I needed.” Gordon encourages people who have a disability not to give up. “Today there are new medicines, treatment, and equipment coming onto the market almost daily. With organizations like NDAD they are accessible to almost everyone. I am grateful to NDAD for the help they have given me. Many disabilities are manageable because of these organizations.”
