The Wallbangers Wheelchair Athletic Organization was founded in 1972 by a group of individuals with disabilities at UND and surrounding areas. Its purpose is to provide recreation and competitive physical activities for people. In addition to wheelchair sports and recreation activities include softball, track & field, paraquatics and snow skiing.
The Wallbangers joined the National Wheelchair Basketball Association in 1979 as a member of the North Central Conference. In competitive conference play, players must be classified according to degree of disability to be eligible to play. Anyone is encouraged to practice with the team, regardless of disability. The Wallbangers participate in exhibition wheelchair basketball games to raise awareness of the sport.
The Wallbangers are sponsored by NDAD. If you would like to become involved in an enjoyable activity, contact NDAD at 701-775-5577 or 1-800-532-NDAD (6323).

NDAD's annual "Escape to the Lake" extravaganza is an awesome, two-day event that provides individuals with physical disabilities the opportunity to water-ski and participate in other outdoor water events such as fishing, pontoon riding, swimming and tubing. "Escape to the Lake" is held at Nelson Lake, near Center, ND. Nelson Lake is ideally suited for such an event as the water is heated by the nearby power plant, thus enabling a more comfortable experience for those participants who may have muscle spasticity. The event is open to any North Dakota resident with a physical disability. Each year, over 60 individuals of all ages and disabilities participate in the Extravaganza.
Experts from Texas Adaptive Aquatics are on-site to provide support and guidance to all water-skiing participants. In addition, adaptive equipment is available to allow participants to experience fishing, boating and tubing. Volunteers from NDAD, sporting Chance and other local groups assist with the event. Participants enjoy a complimentary breakfast and lunch each day was well as the camaraderie and friendships that develop over the weekend. Additional entertainment is also enjoyed by all in the form of a water-skiing show.
For more information, contact NDAD at 1-800-532-NDAD (6323).
